Elson Infant School Induction Policy

ELSON INFANT SCHOOL

INDUCTION POLICY

2008/2009

The induction programme is designed to allow children and parents to become familiar with the school, staff and curriculum experiences prior to embarking on regular school attendance.

We are aware that the children need security, confidence and care which will be promoted through:

            * a programme of visits linking home, school and playgroup before the child       enters school.

            * a gradual introduction to school through planned, phased, part-time attendance.

            * ready access to teachers and support staff who understand and are sensitive to           the unique needs of each child.

            * a structured learning environment which enables each child to explore, play and                          talk.

            * learning experiences that are practical, enjoyable and matched to the child’s    stage of development.

We are aware that parents need to feel trust and confidence in the school. This will be promoted through:

            * a welcoming approach.

            * a planned programme of visits to school giving the opportunity to ask questions                          and familiarise themselves with the building .

            * a partnership where parents feel valuable and valued as their child’s first                                     educator.

            * open, clear, jargon-free communication and information.

            * opportunities to be involved in and contribute to their child’s school    experiences.

            * the knowledge that their child is in safe, professional and caring hands.

To ensure a smooth transition into school for each child we will:

            * collect information about each child and their previous experiences from          parents, playgroups, nurseries and other agencies.

            * share the school’s aims, routines and curriculum with parents through home                    visits, school meetings and the school brochure.

            * ensure that the needs of both the child and parents are met.
