Elson Infant School Homework Policy

Elson Infant School

Homework Policy

The Department for Education and Skills has recommended that children in Years 1 and 2 should spend about one hour per week on homework. At Elson Infant School we believe that this should consist of activities for all year groups which support and extend the work carried out in school.

Aims:

·         to provide opportunities for parents and children to enjoy working and learning together.

·         to develop the home/school partnership by providing opportunities for parents, pupils  and school to work together.

·         to support the work in school through reinforcement and extension.

·         to ensure that parents are clear on their involvement and understand the expectations for themselves and the pupils.

·         to ensure that the needs of individuals are met.

We ask parents to:

·         regularly share a book with your child.

·         support your child with IMPACT maths activities each fortnight.

·         encourage your child to complete the fortnightly “Finding Out” activities.

·         support your child with researching information or resources to enhance their current class topic.

·         encourage your child to be aware of the weekly reading or writing targets e.g. spellings, “pot words” etc.

·         support your child with any specific targets identified by the school.

·         attend any curriculum workshop evenings or briefings with your child to share in their learning.

·        support your child with specific work programmes such as ELS in Years 1 and 2.

The School will:

·        plan suitable tasks and activities for parents and children to enjoy, and work on together.

·        value and reward the efforts made to complete homework.

·        acknowledge or respond to comments in the comment book/Impact diary.

·        make expectations clear for the level of involvement and support from the parent.

·        vary the activities to maintain enthusiasm and interest; IMPACT maths, “Finding Out”, words of the week, etc.

·        set tasks or activities which will support school work through reinforcement or extension.

The Governors will:

·        regularly monitor the effectiveness of the policy by random sampling of activities, discussion with children, discussion with parents and response rates in each year group/ class.
